Rosazzo DOCG wines, especially the finest examples, are prized for their potential to age gracefully over the medium term.
Encompassing the rolling hills to the west of Corno di Rosazzo, within the productive Colli Orientali del Friuli zone, it is located approximately 20km (12 miles) east of Udine city. The abbey after which the DOCG is named sits majestically atop the hill, overlooking the terraced vineyards below. This viticultural tradition dates back to the Middle Ages when winegrowing became an integral part of the landscape. In the 14th Century, a local patriarch even decreed that those failing to plant vines on cleared land would face excommunication.
Similar to much of Friuli, Rosazzo's vineyards experience the climatic influence of both the Julian Alps and the nearby Adriatic Sea, situated just 32km (20 miles) away. The presence of the Alps provides shelter against cold winds from the north. These climatic conditions are particularly favorable for white grape varieties, allowing them to develop acidity and flavor concurrently, resulting in wines that are balanced and intensely flavored.
In the production of Rosazzo wines, Friulano must constitute 50-60 percent of the final blend, complemented by a selection of other local and international varieties. Sauvignon Blanc (20-30 percent), Chardonnay, and Pinot Bianco (20-30 percent combined) are permitted, with an additional allowance of up to five percent Ribolla Gialla.
To achieve DOCG status, these wines must undergo a minimum aging period of 18 months before being released to the market. The Rosazzo DOCG designation came into being amid significant wine administration activities in late 2011, aligning Italy's wine legislation with the standards set by the European Union.
Within Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Rosazzo stands alongside two other esteemed DOCG titles: the sweet white wines of Ramandolo and Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit.
Rosazzo wines, reflecting the terroir, offer a harmonious fusion of fruitiness and acidity. Citrus flavors, notably lemon and grapefruit, dance on the palate, intermingling with the richness of white fruits. Their creamy texture, a result of meticulous aging, leads to a gratifying, enduring finish.
When it comes to pairing, Rosazzo DOCG wines showcase their versatility. Seafood delights, ranging from grilled prawns to buttery lobster, find a perfect match in the wine’s acidity, enhancing both the dish and the wine. Creamy risottos, be it wild mushroom or seafood, become indulgent experiences when accompanied by Rosazzo DOCG.
Soft cheeses such as brie and camembert complement the wine’s texture, creating a delightful fusion of flavors. Even vegetarian options, such as asparagus risotto or creamy pasta dishes, find a suitable companion in the vibrant acidity of Rosazzo DOCG wines.
Livio Felluga Abbazia di Rosazzo Rosazzo DOCG stands as a beacon of prestige within the historic Friulian winemaking tradition. Nestled in a region steeped in viticultural heritage, this label is a testament to centuries of winemaking expertise. The Abbey's vineyards, renowned for their superior grape quality, captivated Livio Felluga's imagination, inspiring him to craft an exceptional white wine from this rich legacy.
In 2009, Livio Felluga's dream materialized into reality with the creation of "Abbazia di Rosazzo," swiftly establishing itself as a symbol of excellence. Following ancient local traditions, this wine is meticulously blended from Friulano, Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon, Malvasia Bianca, and Ribolla Gialla grapes cultivated near the historic Abbey. The mild climate and the soil, characterized by limestone marl and Eocene sandstone, known locally as ponca, provide the ideal terroir for these vines to thrive.
The grapes undergo a careful manual harvest, ensuring optimal ripeness for each variety. After gentle pressing, the free-run must is extracted and fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks with selected yeasts. The wine then matures in oak barrels for approximately 8-10 months, undergoing malolactic fermentation and further refinement in the bottle.
"Abbazia di Rosazzo" by Livio Felluga is a white wine of exceptional character and allure, reserved for special occasions. It is the perfect accompaniment to elaborate seafood menus, noble and flavorful fish dishes, or delicate white meat entrees. Its appearance reveals a pale yellow hue with brilliant golden reflections.
Livio Felluga Rosazzo enchants with its complexity and elegance, offering intense aromas of orange blossom, acacia, and jasmine flowers, accompanied by hints of citrus peel, grapefruit, ripe yellow fruits, peach, apricot, pineapple, and papaya. Subtle notes of fresh almonds, vanilla, pastries, balsamic nuances, and medicinal herbs add depth to its bouquet.
With a robust structure, Livio Felluga Abbazia di Rosazzo exudes breadth and richness, showcasing a profound and enduring aromatic profile that marries ripe fruits with a pronounced saline and mineral vein. A wine of longevity, it reaches its full expressive maturity after a few years of careful aging in the bottle, becoming a true testament to the artistry of Livio Felluga and the terroir of Rosazzo.
Livio Felluga Terre Alte Rosazzo DOCG stands as a true masterpiece, garnering numerous accolades from critics, both Italian and international. It has achieved a rare distinction, being one of the select few white wines recognized globally, proudly representing not just the winery but the entirety of Friuli. Its velvety texture, intense flavors, and intricately nuanced aromas captivate the senses from the very first sip.
Terre Alte is a Friulian wine that emerges from a meticulous blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, and Friulano grapes. These three grape varieties thrive in marly soil enriched with Eocene sandstone, imparting unique characteristics to the wine. After the harvest, the grapes are carefully destemmed and undergo a brief maceration period.
Subsequently, there is a gentle pressing, with Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon fermenting at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks, while Friulano undergoes alcoholic fermentation in small French oak barrels. This divergence continues post-vinification during the aging process, which extends for 10 months, partly in wood and partly in steel.
Upon visual inspection, Terre Alte Livio Felluga Rosazzo reveals a rich straw-yellow hue, exuding remarkable intensity. Its aromatic profile on the nose is intricate, featuring notes of Mediterranean herbs, fruits, blossoms, and spices, orchestrating a harmonious olfactory symphony. On the palate, it offers extreme gratification, with a texture characterized by a savory quality that encourages indulgence, culminating in a lingering finish.
