Trebbiano d'Abruzzo stands as the esteemed counterpart to the red Montepulciano d'Abruzzo in the Italian wine scene. Within the Abruzzo region of Central Italy, it holds the unique distinction of being the sole DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) dedicated exclusively to white wine. The grape varieties utilized in its production form a diverse and intricate group, defying the simplicity implied by the DOC title.

Approximately 14 million liters of Trebbiano d Abruzzo are crafted annually. These wines, resplendent in a golden hue, tend to be dry yet fruit-forward, boasting a delicate bouquet and a refreshing, crisp acidity. While most exhibit these characteristics, a select few producers opt for barrel fermentation and/or maturation, resulting in wines with heightened complexity, depth, and body.
The historical presence of "Trebbiano d Abruzzo" was first documented in 1856 by Raffaele Sersante, who marveled at the widespread popularity of the grape variety, likely the precursor to today's Trebbiano Abruzzese, as observed in the region's vineyards.
According to the stringent DOC regulations, a Trebbiano d Abruzzo wine must comprise a minimum of 85 percent Trebbiano Toscano and/or Trebbiano Abruzzese (also known as Trebbiano d'Abruzzo) and/or Bombino Bianco. While the relationship between these varieties remains a subject of debate, the ruling allows for various combinations, embracing the ambiguity surrounding their identities. The remaining 15 percent, if utilized, can encompass any non-aromatic white grape varieties grown in the province, including Cococciola, Passerina, and white Malvasia, commonly found in the region's vineyards.
Wine labels from this denomination may bear the designations Superiore and Riserva. These titles denote wines produced from lower yields and more mature grapes. Specifically, Superiore wines require a minimum yield of 13 tons per hectare and an alcohol content of at least 12 percent. Riserva wines demand a yield of 12 tons per hectare and a minimum alcohol content of 12.5 percent. Basic Trebbiano d'Abruzzo wine must have no less than 11.5 percent alcohol by volume.
The official production zone for Trebbiano d'Abruzzo precisely mirrors that of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, encompassing all areas of the Abruzzo region not dominated by mountains. This excludes the western inland third, where the highest peaks of the Apennine mountain range are situated. Geographically, the zone covers the coastal half of Abruzzo, extending inland to include the Alto Tirino plateau, the Subequana Valley, and the Peligna Valley. Over 150 parishes fall within this zone, evenly distributed among Abruzzo's four provinces: Chieti, Aquila, Pescara, and Teramo.
Trebbiano d'Abruzzo wine, with its refreshing and crisp character, pairs wonderfully with a variety of foods. Its lively acidity makes it a perfect companion to seafood dishes, such as grilled prawns or lemon-butter baked salmon, enhancing the natural flavors of the seafood.
Additionally, the wine's fruity notes and subtle floral aromas complement light and creamy pasta dishes like fettuccine Alfredo or seafood linguine, creating a harmonious balance of flavors. For a delightful appetizer pairing, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo can be enjoyed with a platter of fresh bruschetta topped with tomatoes, basil, and olive oil, highlighting the wine's vibrant fruitiness alongside the savory notes of the dish.
