Barolo Wine: Conquering Palates Worldwide

Part of Barolo's success is due to King Carlo Alberto of Savoy, who, after hearing about this new structured and full-bodied wine, asked the Marchesa di Barolo, Giulia Colbert Falletti, to taste it. Marchesa Giulia had transformed Barolo, which previously was a sweet and slightly sparkling wine obtained from an open-air fermentation, by building underground cellars.

These cellars created a protected microclimate where the wine could age in a controlled way, developing body and structure. The Falletti di Barolo sent 325 barrels to King Carlo Alberto, one for each day of the year except for Lenten days. The King was so enthusiastic about Barolo wine that he bought an estate in Verduno to produce his own wine.

From the mid-19th century to the present day, Barolo wine has been celebrated as a symbol of Italian tradition and culture. After Celestino Vietti introduced the production of this wine in the Langhe area, Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour also became interested in its production and used it as institutional wine for formal events, including the celebrations for the Unification of Italy in 1861.

After the death of the winery's founder, Giulia Falletti, the winery's estate was inherited by the Barolo Pious Work, which managed the family's fortune, and then by the Abbona family around 1895. Pietro Abbona continued the winery's tradition and brought Barolo wine to be appreciated in Italy and throughout the world during the 20th century, accompanied by new products that were born and developed in the following decades.

Only 11 municipalities in the Langhe region can boast of producing the renowned Barolo, and among them is the picturesque town that bears the same name. The unique climatic conditions of the Langhe territory, which guarantee optimal growth to the delicate Nebbiolo grape variety, are the reason why the wine Barolo maintains a very high quality.

Despite all the municipalities in which Barolo DOCG is produced being located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Langhe, every bottle of Barolo is unique. This variation is due to the diversity of the soil composition on the hills of the area, where only Barolo hosts four different Crus, including the main ones of Cannubi, Sarmassa, Costa Rose, and Brunate.

The creativity and personal interpretation of each producer, from small companies to large wineries, give life to a wine with a thousand facets. For this reason, there are options for every palate, quality level, and budget on the market.

Barolo wines, before being released on the market, must necessarily undergo an aging of at least 3 years, of which 18 months in oak barrels. After 5 years of aging, it can be marketed with the "Barolo Riserva" denomination. Once bottled, it must have an alcohol content of at least 13 degrees.

The choice of when to drink it is entirely personal and depends on each individual's taste and needs. The charm of each bottle of Barolo Wine lies in its evolution over the years, as it is a wine that ages well: the best vintages from the 1960s are still highly appreciated by enthusiasts. Drinking it is a pleasure, but also a continuous discovery.

To serve a bottle of Barolo Wine, it is important to maintain an ideal temperature of 18-20 degrees Celsius. The most traditional pairings are with flavorful red meat dishes, such as roasts, braised meats, stews, and game, but also with aged hard cheeses and flavored foods, such as those with truffles.

Barolo Red Wine: A Guide for Italian Wine Lovers

Barolo, a wine with great personality appreciated worldwide, has its roots in the Nebbiolo grapes grown in a particularly favorable climate. However, producing the best Barolo also requires respecting precise environmental and vine cultivation characteristics.

These characteristics are found in the clayey and calcareous soils of the municipalities of Asti and Cuneo provinces, at an altitude ranging from 170 to 540 meters above sea level. Sun exposure is equally important to ensure the correct maturation of the grapes before harvest. In addition, there are reference tables for the maximum yield of grapes per hectare of vineyard in specialized cultivation for Barolo red wine production (8 t/ha).

The following rules must be followed in order to produce an elegant and persistent wine with a garnet red color, orange reflections, a bouquet of floral, fruity, and spicy notes, and a taste that is both elegant and persistent. Thanks to its exceptional organoleptic characteristics. There is no doubt that Barolo is one of the most prestigious Italian wines and one of the most prestigious wines from Piedmont.

Among the best Barolo Wine producers available on our website, we can mention Giacomo Borgogno Barolo Cannubi DOCG. The pure Nebbiolo grapes grow in the vineyards located in Cannubi, the most famous and renowned cru of Barolo, which was formed about 12 million years ago through sedimentation from the Padano Sea.

The hill features a complex terroir, made up of large marl-clayey and calcareous soils, and a favorable climate that make it one of the most suitable hills for vine cultivation in the world. Wines from this area are considered the most elegant and long-lived in the Barolo wine scene.

This Barolo red wine is produced through natural fermentation without the addition of yeasts, in cement tanks for about 12 days at temperatures ranging from 22 C to 29 C. Subsequently, it undergoes submerged cap maceration for 40-50 days at a constant temperature of 29 C.

After racking, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation, which lasts 15 days at a constant temperature of 22 C. Finally, the wine is aged in 4500 L Slavonian and French oak barrels for 4 years, followed by 6 months of bottle aging.

Bera Barolo DOCG is another excellent Barolo Wine available on ItalianWineLover's website. This exceptional Barolo red wine is a wine produced from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto, it is elegant and robust, austere, and of great nobility.

It exhibits a brilliant garnet-red color that becomes warmer with time. In the glass, you can smell very persistent ethereal and spicy aromas, with slight notes of vanilla, cocoa, coffee, licorice, and hints of truffle. The taste is dry and full, well-balanced.
