No black label for Calabrian wines, saved in Strasbourg together with other Italian wines.
Italian parliamentarians defended the wine from the feared "black label" with which it would have been branded according to EU laws. The damage would have been very important for the Italian economy, as our country is the first producer and exporter in the world, moreover the per capita consumption in Italy is about 33 liters per year with an increasing attention to quality, history, production techniques and the particularities that the territory has to offer in every region.

The Concours Mondial de Bruxelles is a prestigious international enological competition, where are competing two very prestigious Calabrian wines, Tenute San Giovanni will participate, among many participating labels. Besides the traditional gold and silver medals, a special trophy will be awarded in the following categories: "Red Wine - Revelation" and "White Wine - Revelation". Evaluations are entrusted to specialized experts.
Tenute San Giovanni's white wine, called Calomeno, is a wine having a fruity aroma, rich in final aromas of citrus fruits and very fresh. It has a typical Mediterranean taste, fresh and intense, ideal to be drunk chilled with first and second courses of fish, even raw. Mottarossa has a deep red color and a fruity aroma, a long and full-bodied taste, excellent to be tasted with grilled meat, risotto and aged cheese. San Giovanni estates are located on the hill of Reggio Calabria, near Motta Rossa, one of the fortifications built by Arabs from which the wine takes its name.
The wine-truffle pact for Calabria
Even a pact has been signed, in order to consecrate Made in Italy food products, including wines and truffles. The pact was signed by the President of Ais Calabria Maria Rosaria Romano, and the President of the mycological association Tartufi & Tartufai del Pollino e delle Serre-APS, Mario Galima. A pact for truffle hunters and sommeliers to enhance what is precious about the region, as you can find fresh truffles in every season and spectacular wines.
The best Calabrian wines come from Librandi
We noticed Calabria is a land rich with excellent wines. Let's see which are the best ones to be matched with food. We have a red wine; Librandi Megonio Tenuta Rosaneti Calabria Rosso Igt, of an intense red color that derives from magliocco grapes. It is made with a fermentation in steel tanks and another 15 days of maceration always in stainless steel tanks. It is aged in barrique casks and aged for other six months in bottle. It has an impressive aroma of fruit with a balsamic finish, whereas on the palate it is full bodied and with a long finish, suitable for grilled red meats, first courses with meat sauce and spicy cheeses.
From the same winery we haveLibrandi Duca Sanfelice Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva Doc, ruby red for this intense wine made with gaglioppo grapes. Maceration lasts from 7 to 10 days. Aged in steel and cement tanks for 2 years. Suitable for red meats, game and aged cheeses. Last of the house, Librandi Asylia Bianco Melissa Doc, at last a white wine with Mediterranean aromas, fresh and persistent to the palate, very versatile in the table. With white Greek grapes, the vinification is processed in thermo-conditioned steel tanks, with soft pressing of grapes. Aging in steel tanks, with a short stay in bottle for some months before release.
The story of Librandi Family begins many years ago, from three generations tenacious supporters of the Calabrian land and wine. They started from tradition, from Gaglioppo, from Greco and from the great quantity of autochthonous varieties present in the territory. Starting from the sapling and from the rootstocks historically used in the area, they then turned to the experts of viticulture, in order to enlarge their culture and modernize their techniques.
Calabrian Rosé: here are the best wines
Whereas white wines compete with Campanian wines, among Calabrian wines there is also a very strong rosé wine, maybe the best of Italy, that competes only with Apulia. Some of them are excellent to be tasted cold in summertime, even as an aperitif. The best one is Calabria Rosato Igp Celeste Bio, a cherry pink wine with a fresh and fruity aroma, hints of currant and strawberry, the same for the palate, an intense and fresh taste. It should be tasted for a romantic aperitif in company of a cutting board or with shellfishes.
Then there is a Calabria Rosato IGT Pescanera by ippolito, it comes from Cirò Marina, obtained from the black Greek vine, with an intense coral color, with an aroma of strawberries with fresh balsamic notes. Also, on the palate it is sweet with a marine and balsamic aftertaste, very fresh. It can be served with first courses of sea food or with mushrooms, second courses of fish and white meat or with fresh cheese, very versatile in cooking, it should be served at 12° C.
Italian rosé wine is one of the most exported wines of the world, almost at the level of France and it has more or less the same date of birth. In Italy, Calabria, together with Apulia, hold the supremacy, thanks to the grapes present in their territories.
