Castel del Monte, situated in the Puglia wine region of southeastern Italy, is known for its distinctive wines. The region specializes in crafting red wines primarily from Nero di Troia grapes, often complemented with Aglianico and occasionally other grape varieties. Additionally, a limited quantity of rosé (rosato) and white (bianco) wines are produced in Castel del Monte each year.

The name "Castel del Monte" refers to a historical octagonal fortification dating back to the 13th century, perched atop a hill, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Over the centuries, this UNESCO World Heritage Site has served various purposes, including being used as a prison, a refuge during plagues, and as a source of marble and stone for the local community.

Castel del Monte: The Jewel of Puglian Red Wines

This hill is strategically located at the center of the DOC's wine-producing area, extending from Canosa di Puglia to Grumo Appula, covering a distance of nearly 60 kilometres (37 miles).

The DOC encompasses 408 hectares of vineyards, and in a recent year, it produced 296,700 cases of wine.

Despite being nestled between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea, the climate here is characterized by hot and arid conditions. In fact, the name "Puglia" is derived from the Latin phrase "a pluvia," meaning "without rain." The region enjoys approximately 300 sunny days annually, with mid-summer afternoon temperatures frequently exceeding 40°C. These conditions contribute to the development of grapes with high sugar content and, consequently, the potential for high alcohol content in the wines.

Nero di Troia is the primary dark-skinned grape variety used in the production of most Castel del Monte red wines. It has the potential to produce high-quality wines with distinctive characteristics typical of southern Italy. Winemakers appreciate its balanced sugar and acidity levels.

On the other hand, Nero di Troia has its challenges, including low yields and susceptibility to downy mildew, making it less favoured among grape growers and financial analysts. As a result, it has not achieved the same level of popularity as other prominent red wine grapes from Puglia, such as Negroamaro and Primitivo.

Fortunately, Puglia's shift toward quality-focused winemaking has brightened the future of Nero di Troia. In 2011, Nero di Troia wines from Castel del Monte were granted full DOCG status, known as Castel del Monte Nero di Troia Riserva DOCG (see details below).

Castel del Monte DOC red wines must contain a minimum of 65 percent of a combination of Aglianico, Montepulciano, and/or Nero di Troia grapes, with the remaining 35% allowed to be other approved red grape varieties in Puglia.

For varietal Castel del Monte wines made from Aglianico and Nero di Troia, a minimum of 90 percent of the stated grape variety is required. Cabernet wines are also treated as varietal, but they must contain at least 90 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Cabernet Franc.

There is also a Novello category, featuring early-release wines intended for immediate consumption.

Intriguingly, Aglianico and Cabernet wines from Castel del Monte may be produced as Riservas within the Castel del Monte DOC. This involves two years of ageing, starting from November 1 of the vintage year, with at least one year spent in barrels. It's worth noting that Rosso Riserva and Nero di Troia Riserva wines have their own separate DOCG status (see below).

Regarding Castel del Monte white wines, Bianco wines must contain a minimum of 65 percent of a blend of Bombino Bianco, Chardonnay, and/or the local variety Pampanuto, with up to 35 percent allowed from other approved white grape varieties in Puglia. For varietal white wines made from Bombino Bianco, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, a minimum of 90 percent of the stated grape variety is required.

For rosé wines, the rules for blending are the same as those for red wines. Castel del Monte also produces sparkling wines, with the blending rules aligned with those for still wines. These include Castel del Monte Spumante, Bombino Bianco Spumante, and Rosato Spumante, which can be made using either the Metodo Classico or Charmat method for the second fermentation.

Castel del Monte Wine: A Taste of Southern Italy

Rivera Rupìcolo Rosso Castel del Monte DOC

Rivera Rupìcolo Rosso Castel del Monte DOC is a rich and robust red wine that delivers a captivating one-two punch of dark, fresh fruit followed by an enticing blend of savory herbs. As you savor each sip, subtle notes of Mediterranean herbs and aromatic rosemary gracefully emerge in the wine's lingering finish.

This exceptional Rupìcolo wine is meticulously crafted from a harmonious blend of grape varieties, consisting of 50% Montepulciano, 40% Nero di Troia, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The result is a well-balanced composition that showcases the best characteristics of each grape, creating a wine that truly stands out.

The winemaking process for Rupìcolo is a labor of love. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 25°C for a duration of 6-7 days, during which frequent pump-overs are performed to ensure maximum flavor extraction and color intensity. Following this primary fermentation, the wine is thoughtfully aged in cement vessels for a period of 9 months. This extended maturation allows the wine to develop its complexity and depth.

To further refine its character and allow its flavors to harmonize, this Castel del Monte wine undergoes an additional 3 months of bottle aging. This patient approach to winemaking results in a wine that is not only delicious upon release but also possesses the potential for graceful aging, promising an even more nuanced and rewarding tasting experience in the years to come.

In sum, the Rivera Rupìcolo Rosso Castel del Monte DOC from Azienda Vinicola Rivera is a testament to the dedication and artistry of winemaking. It offers wine enthusiasts an opportunity to savor the essence of the Castel del Monte region in every glass, embodying the timeless spirit of Italian winemaking tradition.

Giancarlo Ceci Parco Grande Castel del Monte DOC

Giancarlo Ceci Parco Grande Castel del Monte DOC is the result of a meticulous winemaking process that begins with the careful vinification of grapes sourced exclusively from the estate's native vineyards. This wine presents itself with a captivating and rather intense ruby-red hue, setting the stage for a sensory journey that is both delightful and engaging.

On the nose, this Castel del Monte wine from Giancarlo Ceci reveals a vibrant bouquet characterized by ripe fruit aromas, where prominent notes of succulent black cherry, plum, and an assortment of small berries come to the forefront. This aromatic medley provides a tantalizing invitation to explore the wine's rich and complex flavor profile.

Upon tasting, Parco Grande truly comes into its own. It boasts a remarkable breadth and full-bodied character that showcases the full spectrum of its fruity expression. The initial burst of fruit on the palate is accompanied by an essential tannic structure that adds depth and dimension to the wine. This backbone of well-integrated tannins is complemented by a refreshing underpinning of acidity, ensuring a harmonious balance.

The wine's visual appearance is a beguiling play of colors, transitioning gracefully between shades of purple and ruby. This eye-catching presentation hints at the complexity that awaits within the glass.

As one explores the nuances of Parco Grande, additional sensory delights unfold. On the nose, alongside the fruit-forward elements, subtle hints of citrus and cherries steeped in alcohol mingle seamlessly, adding layers of intrigue to the aromatic tapestry.

In the mouth, the wine's texture is velvety and inviting, delivering an indulgent experience that underscores the lusciousness of red fruits and imparts a touch of spice. The overall effect is both fragrant and memorable, leaving a lasting impression of balance and finesse.

In essence, Giancarlo Ceci Parco Grande Castel del Monte DOC is a testament to the winemaking artistry that celebrates the unique terroir of the Castel del Monte region.
