Emidio Pepe, a passionate and forward-thinking winemaker, founded his own winery in 1964, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who had been making wines at Casa Pepe since 1889. With a deep-rooted connection to winemaking from a young age, Emidio embarked on a personal journey to explore the true potential of Abruzzo's native grape varieties.

Today, the family-run Emidio Pepe winery is managed by Emidio's daughters, Sofia and Daniela, who oversee the daily operations. Sofia takes care of the vineyards and production, while Daniela handles the company's administrative tasks.

Located in Torano Nuovo, just 16 kilometres from the coast, the winery benefits from the proximity to the Adriatic Sea. The sea breeze brings a cooling effect to the vineyards, contributing to the ideal balance between sugar and acidity in the grapes.

Emidio Pepe: Pioneering Abruzzo's Native Grape Varieties

Covering a total vineyard area of 14 hectares, the estate focuses on cultivating traditional Italian grape varieties. Trebbiano d'Abruzzo and Montepulciano take center stage, with a small amount of Pecorino also grown.

The vines are trained using the ancient pergola system, allowing for natural balance. The pergola's foliage protects the grapes on the ground, while the rows provide the soil with breathing space after rainfall. The deep-rooted vines draw essential nutrients and minerals from the soil, even during dry periods. From the very beginning, the winery has embraced natural and sustainable practices.

Emidio Pepe's wines are a testament to his unwavering commitment and deep understanding of the land and its grape varieties. The winery adheres to traditional winemaking methods, employing organic and biodynamic practices to nurture the vines and preserve the environment.

Emidio Pepe firmly believes in the aging potential of Trebbiano e Montepulciano, and thus a significant portion of the production is aged on-site. Only a limited quantity is released immediately, allowing wine enthusiasts to experience the wines in their youthful state. The remaining bottles are stored until the family deems them ready for release, typically after several years of careful aging. This approach offers the unique opportunity to compare young and mature vintages, providing insight into the transformative effects of aging on the wines.

The white wines, carefully stored and aged, are typically released after about five years, while the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is held for a minimum of twenty years before reaching the market. Managing and preserving the extensive collection of over 350,000 bottles from up to twenty different vintages is no small feat, highlighting the winery's dedication to quality and longevity.
