Wines from Calabria among the most renowned ones

Wines form Abruzzo DOC and DOCG wines

You will be able to choose whether to taste them in some events or to give them as a gift. There are wines for every need and also many sparkling wines and dessert wines.

All you need to know about Marsala

Sicilian wines come from ancient times, even though before that the grapes of the South were taken from the North and processed for their wines. The region has always had its own specific wine, which is still very looked for: let's talk about Marsala. Let's dispel the myth that it is a sweet wine, specific for homemade sweets. It exists sweet, as well as dry and semi-dry.

In order to make Marsala, grapes are usually harvested and vinified, then different options can be chosen cooked must, brandy or brandy and cooked must can be added. Instead for a Marsala Vergine nothing is added, its natural alcohol by volume is more than enough to reach 18%. After that, it is aged in 400-liter casks. This allows the typical sweet aroma with notes of dried fruit and Spanish Sherry which characterize it. The taste is in fact as sweet even without the addition of must because the grapes used to make it are already sugary by themselves. The color changes according to the grape that makes it, in Sicily it is produced with Grillo, Cataratto, Ansonica and Damaschino.

Marsala wine is an excellent dessert wine, it goes well with cookies, dried fruit and small pastries. The sweeter one instead exalts the taste of seasoned cheese and dishes made of white meat and white fish.

Best Sicilian Wines

The best Sicilian wines to be matched to many kind of dishes, here they are:

Donnafugata Sul Vulcano Rosso Etna DOC: a fine red wine with a scent of cherry and strawberries. It is sweet and smooth on the palate with a finish of spicy notes. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks with maceration on the skins for 8-10 days at a temperature of 25° C. Aging for 14 months, partly in tanks and partly in French oak. How to serve it? Excellent with salads, appetizers, cold cuts and shellfishes.

Donnafugata Anthìlia Bianco Sicilia DOC: a white wine of the same house, with straw yellow color and an aroma of peach and tropical fruits, that on the palate presents a pleasant sapidity and a fruity taste. Light but with an intense finish. Fermentation in steel tanks, then two months in bottle before release. How to serve it? Perfect with a bruschetta with tomato and basil, with seafood pasta and blue fish. The first wine to be conceived at  Donnafugata and still remains in the hearts of many connoisseurs.

Tasca d'Almerita Tenuta Regaleali Lamuri Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC: a ruby red, with spicy aroma, hints of wood, spicy and bitterish taste with a sweet and firm finish. It is aged in wooden barrels for 12 months. How to serve it? Already ready to be served at a temperature of 18° and 20° C. Excellent with grilled meat, red meat and game.

There are also some noteworthy rosé wines in the region, here they are:

Etna Rosato Doc with a light pink color with orange reflections, that is made of Nerello Mascalese grape and Nerello cappuccio grape.  A sweet aroma with citrus notes and a dry and strong taste. A dry rosé wine, suitable for desserts as well as for some dishes based on truffle, avocado and mushrooms.

Rosè sicilia DOC: a deep pink with a sweet strawberry scent and a sweet taste, for a summer aperitif to be enjoyed with tapas, raw fish and salads.

Etna DOC Spumante Metodo Classico Cottanera: one of the best sparkling wines, with a bright straw yellow color with floral aroma and fresh taste with citrus notes. It goes well with fresh cheeses, salads and tapas. Excellent for those who love dry and sparkling wines with a strong flavor, it can also be matched to desserts such as small pastries.

As you can see Sicilian land gives many different facets of wines to be tried in every way.

Forbes in these days declared Sicily as the first region in Italy for wines. Two years before, the region had already been mentioned by the magazine, which indicated it among the best destinations in Italy where to travel in 2020.

Sicily is a region rich in culture, art and famous monuments, stories and an excellent destination for vacations because of its beautiful sea. If we talk about the cuisine, there is really a lot to say and to try and about Sicilian wines: there is really a lot to know and to taste according to one's taste.

Sicily, according to Forbes, is the largest wine region of Italy, a real wine continent, because it has 98 thousand hectares of vineyards and a mild climate almost all year round which favors the cultivation. Compared to the other wines of the South, the wine of the region can always be cool, thanks to the altitude and to the wind almost always present.

Sicily has entered the wine industry, thanks to its main grape varieties: Nero d'Avola and Grillo, the latter was used to make Marsala wine, in the nineteenth century.

There are many other famous grapes, all thanks to the 70 autochthonous grapes of Sicily, safeguarded and studied at the Botanical Garden of Palermo and that some viticulturists are eager to cultivate, giving them a new life.
